The new attendance policy is affecting students all over the school by forcing them to get a 77% or higher.
This year the school introduced a new attendance policy that works towards getting students more in school and higher average grades. Some students seem to not like this policy while other teachers think it lacks backbone.
“The previous attendance policy didn’t have a lot of teeth to it, administrator Kenneth Voakes said. “So, there wasn’t any real repercussions for missing a lot of attendance.”
Before this year, attendance guidelines had a lot more lenience when coming to school but now it seems a little more stressful, so what do u think about the attendance policy?
“I believe that we lack any kind of substantial attendance that holds kids accountable because it used to be a legal concern that kids didn’t come to school,” teacher Mrs. Mathison said. “But ever since the pandemic, my opinion is that the parents and kids are the ones in charge and there is no sense of duty for kids to come to school.”
They only started using the new attendance policy this year and in what ways has it affected you?
“I don’t like it because the new policy forces me to come into school more,” senior Christian Makhoul said. “And makes me realize that if I don’t come to school, then I will fail my classes.”
Overall, the new attendance policy has reshaped the daily routines of students with the expectation of getting a 77% or higher and some are finding themselves under great pressure.
