There’s more static coming from her radio as Officer Wilson approaches the office to solve another issue between students. Officer Wilson is a police officer who works every day to make sure the school she patrols is a safe place for kids to walk into every day. “Being a school resource officer as to becoming an officer,” Officer Tyler Wilson said. “Being able to complete the academy at such a young age. Never wanted to be a resource school officer, but it changed up to two years. Opportunity came up more than once, and I saw how good the job was, and it had an impact firsthand with students.” For a police officer to get their school resource certification is about a few years but Wilson finished it at a young age and she’s proud to now be a school resource officer. However, it’s important to remember that she is still an actual police officer in the area of Sterling Heights, Michigan, which has had important effects on her life. “It’s impacted my life greatly,” Officer Tyler Wilson said. “I met my husband because of being a police officer, found my dog because of being a police officer, and this job had made a huge impact because I get to see students change. A lot of times I give advice or guidance to students. I’ve noticed that the fights have reduced, and crime has decreased from me being here and present in the building from bad things happening in school.” Wilson lives in a rural area with 18 chickens. She enjoys going up north, snowboarding, and spending time with family and friends. She also has three dogs and is married with two step kids. She is also a normal adult outside of being a police officer and tries to separate her job from her personal life. “I’m a police officer for Sterling Heights and the school district hired me full time,” Officer Tyler Wilson said. “I don’t do any police work outside of school. Having an ability to talk to people, communicate with students and Juveniles here and in general want to have to do this job and have passion for it. There is not a lot of involvement when it comes to crimes in schools. All I do is write tickets and file criminal charges.” As Officer Wilson walks away from the scene, she’s able to breathe with a sigh of relief knowing that her presence in the building is keeping students safe.
