The lights dim and the screen turns on. With each beat of the lively soundtrack playing, the iconic blue characters finally come back to life.
“The Smurfs Movie” is an upcoming musical comedy set to release on February 17th based on the smurf comics all the way back to 1965. Produced and featuring global superstar Rhianna, viewers can expect a modern twist to an old fashioned comic.
“I heard about the new movie and definitely want to see it. I grew up watching Smurfs and because I have two younger siblings, I knew they would also want to watch it, so I told them I would take them when it came out,” junior Tatyana Ramey said. “I think I also heard that Rihanna was going to be voicing Smurfette which I would love to see.”
The Smurfs is a classic movie to watch as a family. The show being around since 1965 allows not only the children to be in awe over their favorite movie but also lets parents and even slightly older kids feel a sense of nostalgia they don’t get with other animated movies Global superstars like Rhianna and James Cordon that can be heard in the movie helps make older kids gravitate towards it more as well.
“I didn’t even know a new Smurf movie was coming out this year,” junior Lily Sheats said. “I have watched many smurf movies but can’t even remember the basic plot of them. Growing up I have seen a lot of different types of movies and learned what keeps my attention and what I like. While it is nostalgic to watch an old childhood movie every once in a while, I don’t find myself watching new movies made for younger generations but who knows, maybe I will give it a chance..”
While The Smurfs generally aims for a younger audience, it doesn’t mean that only little kids can watch it. While many have grown out of watching movies and shows considered to be childish, many still love animated movies like The Smurfs. With the movie being such a classic it’s hard to skip it even when you’re older
“I have loved the Smurfs since I was a kid so when I heard about the new movie I was so excited,” Junior Anna Fugelsang said. “I love the simplicity that all the Smurf movies have while still being very unique and different. I heard that Rhianna was starring as one of the lead roles which I love as it modernizes it for kids that are a little bit older like me
As the final notes echo and the screen fades to black, The Smurfs Movie leaves a lasting impression, reminding viewers of the magic in friendship and the joy of discovery
