Screams were heard from the house as all the exits closed. Two Muslim sisters, Barnes and Paxton played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, go visit introverted Englishman Mr. Reed’s house, played by Hugh Grant, tries to convert him into their religion where they soon realize that he is not as gentle as he may seem.
This movie, “Heretic” by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods was a perfect split between horror, action, and psychology released on November 8th, 2024. This really can fit in multiple movie categories. This movie portrays two young girls eager to prove their religion upon being met by a mentally ill man, overall leading to a fatal game of “cat and mouse”. The movie was extremely realistic even though it was not a realistic scenario. Mr. Reed’s performance by Hugh Grant was incredible and the portrayal of his psychological issues were amazing and accurate. Throughout multiple scenes he experiences inner conflicts along with anxiety attacks along with his disturbing actions and thoughts. For example, the horrifying monologue about religion he shared with the girls Some of the scenes were kind of drawn out or elongated and were unnecessary to the main plot, like the first scene was long.
The movie was an amazing way of showing mental health issues and relating it closely to the plot of the movie while still including the overall theme of religion. This movie is highly recommended to anybody who is interested or studies psychology. It was very intriguing and compelled viewers to really think and analyze what was going on.
