Thick boots stomp against the ground as people call out offering their goods for an overpriced amount. Here, it’s not rare to find a homeless man or sleeping woman protecting her body with her own magical shields. Inside the kingdom of Ilya, found in “Powerless” by Laure Roberts, anything is possible.
The book “Powerless” by Lauren Roberts takes place in a made-up kingdom called Ilya where a plague years ago swept through and killed half the half the population. Those that survived were granted supernatural powers and abilities. Since then, the kingdom has been divided between what are now called elites and ordinaries (people who didn’t get powers). This story follows a girl named Paedyn who lives in the slums of Ilya. Paedyn is an ordinary and has been hiding out, stealing, and robbing those around her to make by. On a random night, without knowing, she saves the prince of Ilya and gets voted on by society to be put in the trials. The trials are something the kingdom holds where elites go against each other and fight to see who makes it out. Paedyn, a simple ordinary disguised as a psychic, has to figure out how to survive in these trials while also making sure her true identity is never revealed.
This book has many fans. It had people on the edge of their seats the whole story and many boasted about how they could not put it down.
This book is a trilogy. This means that the characters and story have so much depth that it feels like you can really connect and sympathize with them. They have so much personality and it feels as though you know them personally. The romance between the Prince and Paedyn stretches over all books making every moment exciting and fun. The author also does a great job with descriptions and words that it can feel like you’re watching a movie in your head.
Based on preferences, the three books could be too much for some people. Also, with the romance stretching over the three books, a lot of people tend not to like a slow burn because they get impatient. While the descriptions are very detailed, sometimes that can make it a little difficult to understand and hard to keep up with. The author uses unique words and slang that could take some time getting used to especially if you’re a new reader. It seems that a lot of the pros and cons are based on personal preference and what you want as a next read.
This book is a trilogy that follows Paedyn as she lives her life as an ordinary in the kingdom of Ilya. Dealing with hardships and tragedies, we get to see how she struggles and builds herself back up, allowing us to grow our own connections to her character.
If you are looking for a new, exciting, and action-packed book, “Powerless” is definitely a must read. I would give it 5 stars.
