Assignment deadlines are ignored, stacks of papers thrown aside, and empty seats all around the school; seniors are slowly losing it.
In about only two months class of 2024 will have accomplished finishing 12 years of hard work and education. Nine and a half weeks left of showing up to school everyday is not an easy feat for the slacking seniors who have lost every ounce of motivation to start and finish the work assigned to them. The long journey is just a stretch away but for most it feels like a whole lifetime until the day it all comes to an end.
“I’m struggling to wake up every morning and physically go to school because I’m so tired. Every day I come to school I feel like it’s a waste of my time because I’ve been doing assignments that don’t do anything for me,” senior Gena Aljanabi said.
Most seniors have to work on a senior project in their English classes in order to graduate. This project takes place in the last three months of the year. It consists of long hours of work and dedication which seems to be a struggle for most seniors because they are ready to just be done with everything.
I think that some aspects of this project are important because it forces us to look back and reflect on the past 12 years of our life, and I have been enjoying those parts,” senior Kailey Haddad said. “However, other parts are just unnecessary. Why do we need to write yet another research project? We’ve been doing them for years. It’s the last couple months of our high school years. Just let us go in peace.”
Seniors have trouble staying in the mindset of high school daily life because they are ready to move on to the next chapter of their life.
“My mental health was completely destroyed because I wanted to learn more about the science and medical field. My sleep cycle was altered a number of different times; sometimes I would sleep at 10:00 P.M. but most of the time I would finally have the chance to sleep from 2:00 A.M to 4:00 A.M.,” senior Jaylen Sparks said.
The low motivation and tendency to shrug off responsibilities like going to class, doing homework, or studying for tests is a collective struggle among seniors everywhere. It’s real and here with nowhere to go.
