Once the countdown goes off, staff and students stuff their faces with pancakes, eager to win the race.
On Friday, March 15, HOSA organized a pancake eating contest amongst staff and students during the three lunches, fundraising for HOSA state competitions.
“We were trying to think of different fundraising ideas to excite students,” teacher Lola Hess said.
Hess put HOSA students to work by requiring them to stay on watch for any potential danger of contestants choking or getting sick.
“My job is to be handing out more pancakes to anyone who finishes the original five,” senior Nora Tandy said. “I am also prepared to perform the Heimlich on any choking contestants.”
However, teacher Darlene Marshall and Associate Principal Tony Tocco were clashing all week.
“I take these competitions very seriously,” Marshall said. “My image is at stake, and I intend to smoke Tocco like a fine deli ham.”
After the contest, Tocco replied to the commination.
“Beating Marshall is what got me through the contest. My only goal was to beat the O.A.L,” Tocco said.
Winners were rewarded with a $15 profit, and at 4.5 pancakes, Coach Browe was marked as the first winner.
“Being a strength and conditioning coach, you got to know that your macros, carbs, proteins and fats are super important, so I got my carb load for the day,” coach Matthew Browe said.
Students and staff gathered together to observe and participate to raise funds to help out HOSA earn funds for the state competition.
