With NBA “old heads” bashing the current NBA, the current fans of the game have come up with the trend “we done with the ’90s.” So, who’s right in this debate? Are We done with the ’90s or is the game too soft now?
To define what makes an old head is debatable but, in this case, you can assume we are talking fans of the ’80s and ’90s. They prefer the way the game used to be played. Slow paced, physical and with little perimeter game. the game was played primarily in the paint with players rarely switching teams. This was the era of the ’90s, but the game is a lot different and resembles college basketball.
The current game is filled with high scoring fast paced and heavy 3 pointers. The game mainly changed to become more offensively based with less strict dribbling rules and less physicality. With all the restrictions defensively, the players of today can put their offensive skills on full display.
With change comes controversy, with current fans calling old players “plumbers” and the old heads calling the current players “soft.” Now to settle this debate we need to look at the facts. While the game today is a lot less physical and more offensive based, the truth is that evolution is real, and today’s players are more talented than ever. No matter how lenient the league is with offensive play you can’t deny the talent of today’s stars and with the defensive restrictions, being a great defensive player in today’s game is more impressive than ever. The old players hating today’s game is damaging the young fans’ perspective of the game.
We need to also show respect for the past as great players can thrive in any era. The current fans claim the players back than had no “bag”, but this is not true. Players back then didn’t have the opportunity to show it with all the dribbiling restrictions
Overall, we are not “done with the ’90s” but calling the current game trash is also not right. We need to show appreciation to all eras of basketball and give a balance of showing respect to legends while also supporting the current game and its future.
