“This ain’t Texas (woo), ain’t no hold ’em (hey) So lay your cards down, down, down, down.”
After Beyonce’s iconic Verizon Super Bowl commercial, she shocked the world by announcing a country album releasing March 29. On February 11 she released her country hit “Texas Hold’em” which hit charts instantly. With it being announced during the Super Bowl and because of a popular Tik Tok dance the song has been repeatedly being played on everyone’s phones; however, there has been issues with the song being allowed to play on country radios because they choose not to classify it as a country song even though Beyonce herself is a Houston Texas native.
After just a week the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and has a rapid number of streams reaching 40 million. After many years of hinting at releasing a country album, the release to “Texas Hold ‘Em” marks the introduction to Act II of Beyonce’s “Renaissance” trilogy.
Even after all its success, country fanatics won’t allow it to be played since they believe the song isn’t meant for an average country listener.
According to “The New York Post” an Oklahoma country station refused to play Beyonce’s song after a fan requested it. The fan took their story to “X” and shared Southern Central Oklahoma Radio Enterprises Broadcasting responses to the request, and they said, “We do not play Beyoncé on KYKC as we are a country music station.” The radio station faced backlash from Beyonce’s renowned fans because they believe Beyonce should have the same respect as any other country artist.
Many fans took to the media and shared their opinion; commenting that the choice to not play Beyonce’s country hit is because she’s a woman of color.
Country music is known to be a very white dominated genre and choosing not to play one of the most successful female artists causes people to question country fanatics’ morals. Even after stating that she’s going to step into the world of country music many say that her current releases aren’t “country enough”.
Beyonce is a global sensation, yet people keep attempting to put up obstacles in the way of her art.
