Re-Live Sports

Re-Live+Sports

Brendan Moore, Senior Writer

Sports fans are craving for live sports to return, but that may not happen for at least another month. To pass time and fill the need for sports, people have resorted to watching replays of classic games. It is also a perfect time to relive Detroit sports history. After all, Detroit sports has had a great history of championships and outstanding games. Here are my recommendations of games to rewatch during quarantine.

Detroit Lions vs Dallas Cowboys- January 5th, 1992

There is one stat that haunts the Lions: they have not won a playoff game in 28 years. That last win was against the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs. Unfortunately for Dallas, their starting quarterback Troy Aikman was injured during the regular season, and missed the playoffs entirely. Lions’ great Barry Sanders was a big threat to Dallas’ defense. This game was one of the best moments of the 90’s in Detroit sports. You can watch the game on the NFL’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soH33XuFUk0).

Detroit Tigers vs Oakland A’s- October 14th, 2006

Magglio Ordonez’s walk-off grand slam remains as one of the best moments in Tigers history. This game featured many clutch performances from Tigers hitters and pitchers. Not only did the Tigers win, but they made it to their first World Series since 1984. You can watch this nail-biting game in its entirety this Sunday (May 17th) on FOX Sports Detroit.

Detroit Pistons vs Los Angeles Lakers- June 14th, 2004

Relive the last time that the Pistons won the NBA championship. Not only do the Pistons have a great team, but the Lakers have hall of famers Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. All series long, the Pistons were led by Finals MVP Chauncey Billups who averaged 21 points per game. In game five, Ben Wallace dominated the boards for Detroit. He had 22 rebounds that night which led the Pistons to the NBA championship. You can watch the game on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN1uvjFy61s).

Detroit Red Wings vs Pittsburgh Penguins- June 4th, 2008

The Red Wings have arguably been the most successful Detroit sports team. They have won 11 Stanley Cups, which is the NHL’s championship trophy. This game was the last time the Wings took home the Stanley Cup. Detroit was leading the series three game to two before they clinched the series in game six. The Wings were led by hockey icons Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lidstrom. The full game can be seen on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t3Q0LLa_j0).
